We will begin by outlining the origin of oil and gas, then the geological occurrence and methods of exploration and production.
Welcome to “The Geology of Oil and Gas”
The Geology of Oil and Gas is an overview of petroleum geology, the oil industry, and its geopolitics. This course is 0.25 credits and will meet in Scovel 116 each Friday afternoon between 2:30 and 3:50. Students will work in groups during the exploration portion of the course and will learn to generate oil and gas prospects, describe drill core and cuttings, and analyze and interpret well log and geophysical data.
Learning Objectives of Geology of Oil and Gas:
– To understand the geologic origins of oil and gas, the stratigraphic and structural setting and distribution of petroleum fields with respect to tectonics and geologic time.
– To learn the basic techniques of petroleum exploration, drilling, and production.
– To learn to assemble subsurface geologic data and assess hydrocarbon potential based on scant real-world data.
– To understand the significance of petroleum in geopolitics, and the local economy.
